-------------------------------------------------- ----- Background

Rise of the Netherlands had several causes of religious, political and socio-economic:

- Carlos Estates I and Felipe II

In 1469, Isabel of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon married and inherit his kingdom left to Charles I and V of Germany, which was a Bourbon prince abroad and because to Juana, daughter of the Catholic kings was not able to rule by his madness. Therefore, the death of Ferdinand of Aragon, Charles I received an inheritance from his grandparents to the throne of Castile, including possessions in America and the Crown of Aragon and Catalonia, including Sicily, Sardinia, Naples and some places of North Africa. Of the legacy of his grandfather Maximilian, Emperor of Germany, received the rights to the Emperor of Holy Roman Empire and Habsburg possessions in Austria, Tyrol and southern areas of Germany and his grandmother Mary of Burgundy received Netherlands, Franche-Comte and rights to the duchy of Burgundy. Later, all this would inherit Felipe II, son of Charles I, becoming owner of an immense territory. [1]

- The religious problem.

Carlos V had problems with Germany because it would be subject to the policy of Spain or Italy or France and not willing to accept religious laws, as the first NCIP were Protestants. Charles V had to recognize the Protestant because he was harassed by more fronts and financial difficulties. Thus, the emperor lost Germany and focused on ensuring the safety of the Netherlands, and France remained threatening.

In the Netherlands

Carlos I put a regent to govern for him because of the magnitude of his empire. On the death of the regent Margaret of Austria appointed his sister Mary of Hungary, as governor of the Netherlands in 1531, but religious discontent grew. Lutheranism had already penetrated from the year 1518, which Charles I refused and in 1521 issued an edict to burn all books and Lutherans in 1522, without consulting the pope, became inquisitor Van der Hulst, which was secular. A party that made many edicts against Lutheranism the penalties imposed were too harsh. [2] Protestantism came to the Netherlands by three points: Lutheranism made progress in Antwerp by the Augustinian friars and the Hanseatic merchants. Later in 1520, the Anabaptists who waved to the people for the deaths of Protestant martyrs and had an apocalyptic vision of God's kingdom on earth. Finally, Calvinism was broadcast from Geneva and Strasbourg and spread to Antwerp Flanders [3] .

Felipe II was thought to have the duty to defend Catholicism and Protestantism end therefore was charged in the Netherlands did not want to listen to the noble or consult the States General of the Netherlands, which did not pay attention.
